It's a bag! It's a parka! It's the most comfortable sleeping suit you'll ever wear around camp!

Raku in actionYou could call Nunatak's Raku Alpine Bag the world's coziest parka. Or you might say it's the most convenient and livable sleeping bag ever made. Either way, it's like a gift from the mountain gods for campers who hate to crawl out of a warm sack on a cold morning.

In designing the Raku, Nunatak added sleeves and a drawstring-closure ankle hem to a standard mummy sleeping bag. To get in, loosen the drawcord at the bottom and slide the bag over your head; or enter via the main zipper, which runs down your sternum like in a jacket.

The extra-long sleeves keep your arms mobile but always insulated, and the bottom opening enables anyone to be a sleep walker. The benefits are numerous. No more cramped, cross-armed sleeping like the guest of honor at an open-casket funeral. No more twisting up in your sleeping bag every time you roll over. No more freezing your hands and arms when you want to read. No more enduring an uncomfortably full bladder while working up the nerve to answer nature's call on a chilly night.

Nunatak RakuOnce you reach camp, or perhaps that ridgetop lunch spot, pull on the Raku and you're already in bed. For rambles around camp, simply loosen the drawstring and pull the bag to waist level. "The most mobile bag I've ever tested," noted Northwest Editor John Harlin after cooking dinner while wearing the Raku.

The more we tested this bag, the more our eyes lit up with possibilities. Some saw visions of winter comfort, while others dreamed of the ultralight possibilities (why pack a parka?). The very conservative 20°F rating, fluffy 800-fill-power down, and 2 1/2-pound weight didn't hurt, either.

While we'd like to see the stratospheric price come down ($497-$581, depending on size and shell material), we think the Raku's innovations in mobility paint a bright future for sleeping bags.

A fantastic hybrid design for alpine weather in a very useful package. The Raku sleeping bag eliminates redundant layers for ultra-light travel and incredible warmth. The sleeves on the fully baffled Raku can be pulled inside to create a collar, while the elastic shock-corded closure allows for unparalleled mobility and access. Our unique front zipper allows you to sleep in your climbing harness without un-roping.
New for 2002, the Raku is now available in 3 configurations; the standard is rated to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Newly developed Raku's are available in a differentially cut Zero F, and a -30 F configuration with custom fill and dimensions. Please call or send us an e-mail for details on any of our 800+ down gear.
When used as a liner bag for Arctic expeditions in conjunction with our Expedition Overbag Arc-Alpinist, you'll have the most versatile system on the hill. As a stand-alone parka/bag on a thur-hike or a climb of Mt.Rainier , this bag may revolutionize the way you approach sleep in the backcountry.

FRONTALS: PETZL MYO XP.

• Resistent a l' aigua.

Clever toothbrush

It's superlight, convenient on the trail, easy to pack, and far less embarrassing than trimming your toothbrush handle. Squeeze toothpaste into the Clever's hollow end, twist to dispense onto bristles, and voil?, sparkly bicuspids for less hassle and weight than ever before. A secure top covers the head for no-mess storage, and the handle easily holds a week's worth of toothpaste. We broke the dispenser on one sample, but that was after using it on the trail and at home for several weeks straight.

Natural Tooth Brushes.

If you find yourself in the backcountry without a toothbrush, you can still practice good dental hygiene: Chew on the end of a stem or twig, then use the gnawed end as a "brush."
Requirements for a stick-brush are simple. It should fray nicely when chewed and be tolerably tasty. Good choices include twigs from sweet gum, pine, birch, and spruce trees, as well as from willow and sage. Just stay away from poison oak or ivy and any tree or bush you can't identify. Many are poisonous to humans when ingested.
